Michale Palin in Ohrid

Kaliopi in a BBC documentary
Kaliopi official website:

See also Michael Palin's New Europe site.

Ohrid, 29th August 2007 - Kaliopi, together with Michael Palin, the renowned comedian staring in the famous Monty Python serial, took part to the shooting of the BBC documentary entitled Michael Palin’s New Europe, directed by the eminent director Jean-Paul Davidson.

This documentary on Macedonia is a part of the documentary series about Eastern European countries among which Albania, Bulgaria, and Turkey.

Kaliopi and Michael Palin were walking and chatting along the streets of Ohrid, and Kaliopi, as a host presenter, presented to her guest the beauties of this city.

I just can’t hold back the excitement brought by my collaboration with BBC and with Michael, by their professionalism, their humanity, and their knowledge about Macedonia. We were shooting in several locations in Ohrid, and at the end I sang Don’t Cry for them accompanying myself on piano, Kaliopi said.

Esma in Land of Gypsies

Joyous Gypsy Caravan trails Romani musicians through Canada and the U.S., then on to Romania.
Joyous Gypsy Caravan trails Romani musicians through Canada and the U.S., then on to Romania.

Gypsy Caravan

Featuring Esma Redzepova and Johnny Depp. In English, Romany, Spanish, Macedonian, Romanian, and Hindi with English subtitles. Rated G. Opens Friday, July 27, at the Cinemark Tinseltown

Even if you have little interest in the music of the far-flung Romany people and not much patience for concert movies, you are likely to want to run away with this Gypsy Caravan.

Directed by Britain's Jasmine Dellal and shot by Albert Maysles and Alain de Halleux, the film follows five diverse musical groups on a six-week tour of Canada and the United States back in 2001, taking time out to visit each of their homelands.

The most immediately ear-catching, and eye-filling, performer is Esma Redzepova, a size-large Macedonian dubbed "the Queen of the Gypsies" on a previous tour of India, from where the hypnotic Maharaja hails. So do the Roma people, in fact, as is made clear by this largely non-narrated effort, with its combination of on-camera discussions, storytelling songs, and colourful travel footage. Aside from intimate moments in the tour bus and within the confines of various planes, stages, and hotel lobbies, we spend the most time in Romania, home to two of the groups.

One is the infectious horn-based Fanfare Ciocarlia, who combine Turkish, Balkan, and klezmer influences, while the better-known outfit Taraf de Haidouks (translated as Band of Brigands) is led by the wizened Nicolai Neaucescu. This philosophical fiddler is seen in his 80s, still working and, like everyone else here, chain-smoking to support his entire village back home. (The support of fan Johnny Depp hasn't hurt.) It turns out that Redzepova, whom we also catch in a marvellous 1960s TV clip, raised 47 abandoned children with her late husband.

This soulful diva proudly claims that she has "never been assimilated", but that isn't quite true. She may not have compromised her art, but the Queen's music is as different from that of the Romanians as Spaniard Antonio El Pipa's dancing is distinctive from that of Maharaja especially when they feature a cross-dressing specialist in the "knee dance". As El Pipa points out, flamenco is now so associated with Spanish culture that people often forget its Romani nature.

Indeed, part of the film's purpose is to school viewers as to the tremendous variety of expression among what used to be called Gypsies, and to replace widely circulated stereotypes with more humanistic which is to say purely joyous insights. At almost two hours long, Gypsy Caravan is dense with feelings as well as information, so don't be surprised if some in the audience need to leave the theatre once or twice to cool down, and then come back for more.

PM Gruevski: Says the Right Words

PM Gruevski: We will turn Macedonia into a decent living place
MRT.com.mk Monday, 30 July 200

nikola_gruevskiEleven months have passed since this Government has tried to do something to improve the citizens' living standard, enable more quality in life, as well as prevent corruption and crime. These are our main tasks, which we will realize until Macedonia becomes a decent place for living, stressed Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski in his address at Sunday's traditional gathering in Trnovo, organized by the Community of Organizations of Ethnic Macedonians exiled from neighboring countries. Gruevski referred to the Government's activities in the economy sector, especially improvement of the general business climate, reminding on the reduction of taxes and bureaucratic procedures.

"We are working on encouraging domestic and foreign investors to come to Macedonia and open new jobs", emphasized PM Gruevski.

He said this is important in the country's preparations for full-fledged NATO and EU membership.

"That is the place where we will be a country without borders, a state without people feeling as second-class citizens, where people will not be told 'no' at every border", stated Prime Minister Gruevski.

He stressed that all undertaken activities are in the function of NATO and EU accession.

"Benefits of NATO and EU membership will soon be felt. When we become part of Europe without borders, Europe in which all Europeans have the same treatment and human rights, humiliations and insults will disappear", added Gruevski.

Welcoming Macedonians from Australia, USA and neighboring countries, PM Gruevski said that nobody would be able to deny Macedonians to an extent that they cease to exist or stop feeling what they are.

"The more they put pressure, the more we are denied, the more they create problems for us, I am certain that the Macedonian within will grow stronger", underlined Gruevski.

Vice Premier Zivko Jankuloski expressed hope that exiled Macedonians would be able to organize such gatherings in their own countries in the upcoming period.

"The Macedonian Government will always support this tradition in Trnovo", added Jankuloski.

Representatives from the party of Macedonians in Greece "Rainbow", "OMO Ilinden-Pirin" from Bulgaria , and "Macedonian Alliance for European Integration" in Albania also addressed the gathering.

A Resolution due to be sent to the European Parliament, EU chair-country Portugal and NATO Headquarters was read at the end of the event.

The Resolution rejects the request of Thessaloniki mayor and other mayors from the Greek part of Macedonia that the European Parliament adopts a resolution for non-recognition of Macedonia's existence.

"Republic of Macedonia does not steal others' historic past. Along with parts in Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, and Serbia in the part of Kosovo, Republic of Macedonia is part of Macedonia's ethnic map and has the full right to call itself Republic of Macedonia, while its people to be called Macedonians. Most of countries worldwide and majority of the UN Security Council member-states have recognized the Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name, and therefore we appeal to all MEPs to provide their contribution in the Macedonia's recognition under its constitutional name, thus enabling the country's sooner EU and NATO accession", said president of the Community of Organizations of Ethnic Macedonians exiled from Greece Nikola Kosturski.

The 27th traditional Trnovo gathering was held under motto "No United Europe without Multicultural Balkans"

Makfax Spreads Greek Propagnada #2

By David Edenden

Can everyone please contact Makfax to tell them, when publishing Greek government propaganda, to always include the Macedonian reply to anti-Macedonian slander. Makfax is hurting Macedonia by letting this Greek nonsense pass without comment.

Greece is waiting for response on 'concessions' on name of Macedonia
The independent news agency Makfax

Athens/Paris, 14:48

Greek PM Costas Karamanlis sent a message to the Macedonian authorities that Athens is waiting for an adequate response on 'the concession it made' in efforts to solve the issue on name differences. (We can't concede on human rights for Macedonians living in Greece)

'We have taken the necessary steps, now we are waiting for the other side to respond adequately', the Greek PM said yesterday. (No you did not take any steps. Greek policy regarding minority rights is cultural genocide for Macedonians in Greece. Greece is the envy of every fascist, every rascist, every ethnic cleanser in the Balkans.)

Karamanlis spelled out this statement during his official visit to Paris, where he met with the French President Nicholas Sarkozy and PM François Fillon. (Sarkozy and Fillon lagughed in his face)

Karamanlis addressed the issue of differences over the name of Macedonia during talks with French top officials, focusing on the European perspective of the Western Balkan's countries. (The only European perspective is that Greece is an embarrassment.)

Some of the Greek media paid special attention to the cancellation of the scheduled joint press conference. President Sarkozy called off the press meeting. (Sarkozy did not want to be seen with Karamanlis ... too embarrassed)

According to the opposition-oriented daily Ta Nea, by this move, the French President sent a clear message he won't allow to be embroiled into the Greek pre-election campaign. (Sarkosy also sent a message that he thought Karamanlis was a complete a#%hole.)

Montenegrin: Another Langugage in the Balkans

Montenegrin becomes official language in Montenegro
Makfax vesnik:

Podgorica /31/07/ 12:19

The Constitutional Commission of the Montenegrin Parliament adopted the draft-constitution that makes the Montenegrin an official language in Montenegro.

The opposition parties did not attend the session of the Constitutional Commission, claiming that the government was unwilling to reach an agreement on the state's highest act.

'It's obvious that there is no agreement with the government regarding the constitution. The authorities turned down all our proposals over the contents and the process of adopting the constitution, and we have been forced to such move,' said Zoran Zhizhic, a Representative of pro-Serbian bloc of parties.

The parties failed to reach an agreement on the Church and state insignia. The draft-constitution is unlikely to single out the religious communities.

The new constitution will be adopted if backed by two-thirds majority in parliament. If the parliament fails to adopt the constitution, the country will hold a referendum.

Podgorica proclaimed independence last year following the referendum at which more than 55% of voters supported the break-up of Serbia-Montenegro, which was the last remnant of the former Yugoslavia /end/"

Why Can't Robert Kaplan Find Any Macedonians!

Dear Robert Kaplan,
Balkan Ghosts
Eastward to Tartary

From: David Edenden

I found your old travel article from 1989 from the New York Times website on your visit to Greek Macedonia (which is thankfully available for free). Robert, you are a good writer and this is a good article. It makes me want to book my ticket right now! However, you forgot to mention any ethnic Macedonians who might be scurrying around the mountains of Vitsi and Gammos, a place where Macedonians gathered to fight for their rights during the Greek Civil War, unfortunately closing the wrong side. You mention Vlahs, and Greeks of course, but no ethnic Macedonians. Probably just an oversight.

Now in Balkan Ghosts, you said Macedonians were really Bulgarians who spoke Bulgarian with a speech impediment. I assured my grandfather, after he slowly read the Macedonian chapter of your book, that the error would probably be corrected in the following edition, because ... you know ... so many countries, so little time! (Has it? I don't think so. Maybe later.)

In another book, Eastward to Tartary, you mentioned that no one wrote about the existence of the Macedonian people as a separate ethnic group, prior to WW2, so therefore "Tito invented a counterfeit nation", as the Greek slander goes. Well, Robert, I think you must have forgotten Krste Misirkov and his book, On Macedonian Matters - 1903, and lets not even mention the Bulgarian slander that Macedonians were invented by a Serbian plot circa 1890.

If it exists,I will try to get a picture of you, at the Krste Misirkov Institute, which is "The Academie Francaise" of the Macedonian language. I am sure you visited there with the professors, and they must have showered you with all kinds of documents and information about the Macedonian people. Maybe you lost them?

Now Robert, I am starting to be suspicious. I admit I have an incurable form of male answer syndrome. I have never met you, but let me see if I can guess why you you overlooked the plight of ethnic Macedonians in Greece . I know you spent a great deal of time in Greece and at least one of your children was born there and you speak fluent Greek.

Was it your wife? Did she say "if you discussed the mistreatment of ethnic Macedonians in Greece you could never eat feta cheese in Athens again"? Did she say "you could never return to the Greek Islands"? Did she say that "you would lose all your Greek friends and your picture would be posted in every Greek restaurant, in every "Greek Town", around the world ... behind a dartboard"?

I have a suggestion that can address my concerns and those of your wife. Have one of your nephews or nieces (hopefully named Kaplan) to do a story on the pressure on the small Jewish communities in both Macedonia and Greece to toe the "nationalist party line" in their respective countries. Maybe Dimitar Vlahov can be mentioned, who according to C. L. Sulzberger, "often spoke out in defense of the rights of the Jews, when Jewish members of the Ottoman Parliament were too cowed to speak" (Sulzberger's words "A long row of candles; memoirs and diaries, 1934-1954"). In addition, the movement to create a "Joint History Project" for the Balkans can also be discussed.

That's the cake. The icing on the cake would be a report on the Greek Issues Caucus and how they destabilize the Balkans by ignoring human rights violations for ethnic Macedonians in Greece ... and Bulgaria too!

Anyway, thanks and don't be a stranger!

A Greece of Forests And Mountain Lakes - New York Times

Published: February 12, 1989

"The town of Kastoria boasts a spectacular situation at the foot of the Vitsi and Grammos mountains, at the edge of a lake that has the mysterious, toneless quality of a dusty mirror.

The lake gets its name from Orestes, Agamemnon's son, who according to legend founded Kastoria during a grief-stricken, self-imposed exile after murdering his mother, Clytemnestra, and her lover. Kastoria was occupied by Bulgars, Serbs, Albanians and Turks before being restored to Greece in 1912. The mountains behind the town were scenes of important battles in World War II and the subsequent Greek Civil War. " ...

...Metsovo's several thousand inhabitants are Vlachs, originally from Rumania, who speak their own Latin-based language as well as Greek. The town owes its original wealth to an incident in the 17th century, when a Turkish vizier, out of favor with his sultan, was given refuge by a local peasant. The vizier later came to power and returned the favor by granting Metsovo virtual independence and tax-free privileges, a circumstance that led many wealthy Christian families to settle here and build mansions.

Some thoughts on Andreas Papandreou, Prime Minister of Greece

By David Edenden

Below are two articles about the intention of Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou to recognize the Macedonian language in the former Yugoslavia and in Greece.

I believe this issue is so important as to put it the scale of Misirkov's "On Macedonian Matters", the ABCEDAR and the founding of the Macedonian literary language in 1944. I have yet to find a good detailed article about this issue. Any good information would be appreciated whether it is a link or some insight. At a minimum, the "Elefteros Tipos" article(s) should be translated.

My theory is that Greece's policy of denying the ethnicity of its Macedonian minority was a model (along with Turkey's treatment of its Kurdish minority, and the invasion of Cyprus) for every fascist, every racist and every ethnic cleanser in the Balkans. It is one of the factors that led to the vicious fighting during the fall of Yugoslavia that seemed to puzzle so many western journalists. Yet few journalists even thought about this issue.

According to "Elefteros Tipos" Papandreou was ready to recognize the Macedonian as a language of Yugoslavia in 1986 and recognize Macedonians as a minority in in Greece 1988. I believe (but am not sure) that Mitsotakis used the "soft on Skopians" argument to defeat him in 1991 with the assistance of the USA and most of the EU who viewed Papandreou as an erratic bogeyman.

Meanwhile Mitsotakis allowed (or continued to allow) Greek students to study in at Kiril and Metodi University in Skopje which indicated a passive recognition of the Macedonian language.

It is my understanding that Papandreou used this issue to outflank Mitsotakis the right by denouncing it as a betrayal of the Greek position on the non-existence of Macedonians. He returned to power in 1994. Like George Wallace in Alabama, he was not going to be "out niggered" on the question of human rights of ethnic Macedonians in Greece and the status of the Republic of Macedonia.

Let us now pause and consider the US position on Greece, which supported the Greek Right and totally ignored human rights abuses against ethnic Macedonians. Papandreou received no "brownie points" from the US/EU for his progressive treatment of Macedonians. Calling US/EU policy hypocritical is like saying the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. It may be human rights abuse in "The West" but in the Balkans its called "life".

It is also worth noting that Robert Kaplan (Balkan Ghosts ) lived in Greece at this time, yet never mentioned this affair in any of his writing.

In Greece, the 1990's were used by the left and the right to see which party could be more hysterical on the "Macedonian Question". US and European reporters (which seemed to suffer from "50 First Dates" syndrome), were perplexed at the Greek position. In all the articles that I have read, no one to my knowledge linked the behavior of the Greek government towards Macedonians as part of the "Balkan problem.

What to do? Why Bother?

There are large forces in operation against Macedonian interests but things change. We have to develop a broader written record of the issue affecting Macedonia to be able to maneuver when change happens. We cannot wait for others to do it for us. Someone with knowledge of Greek should translate these articles.

Timeline of the History of Macedonia

The Greek paper "Elefteros Tipos" announces that Prime-Minister Papandreu in the talks with Yugoslav presidency member Stane Dolanc has agreed to recognize the Macedonian language as one of the official languages in Yugoslavia. 1988]

Greek Prime-Minister Papandreu and the Foreign Affairs' Karolos Papulias, agree to recognize the Macedonian language in Greece. The banker's affair "Koskotas" brings down the PASOK government, and the documents were never signed.

M I L S N E W S Skopje, 20 September, 1994

PAPANDREOU RECOGNISED MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE
?

The opposition right wing Greek paper "Elefteros Tipos" (paper of Nea Demokratia) published a "confidential document" from the former Yugoslavia, issued 16 March, 1988, proving the then PASOK govt, i.e., Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou and Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias officially agreed to recognise the Macedonian language.

The paper believes president Gligorov is using the document, which has a decisive influence on negotiations on the Macedonian question. The document was signed following a two-day meeting of the then Yugoslavia's foreign minister Budimir Lonchar and his counterparts from Bulgaria, Albania, Greece and Romania.

It also states minority issues and improvement of co-operation from aspects of language, passport regime and border areas. The paper claims this concession by PASOK dated from a previous Lonchar- Papoulias meeting back in 1985, and the 1986 meeting between Papoulias and Stane Dolanc, member of the then Yugoslav presidency. "Tipos" claims the PASOK did not only recognise the Macedonian language, but was also ready to recognise the Macedonian minority in Greece, as well.

It was 44 Years Today

Marking the 44th anniversary of the catastrophic 1963 Skopje earthquake

Skopje, July 26 (MIA) - Skopje is to mark Thursday the 44th anniversary of the catastrophic 1963 earthquake, which killed 1.070 and injured 3.000 people.

A broken clock marking the time of the earthquake, 5:17am, remains at the scene. The severe earthquake left some 80 percent of Skopje in ruins, with 1.070 dead persons and more than 200.000 homeless. Relief in money and kind, including medical, engineering, and building teams with supplies, came from 78 countries. From this, Skopje was called the 'City of International Solidarity.'

In the days after the earthquake, 35 nations asked the United Nations General Assembly to put relief for Skopje on its agenda, and a campaign directed at national governments and international agencies began to identify resources to assist in recovery efforts.

As the General Assembly stated in resolution 1882 of 14 October 1963, the spirit of international solidarity demonstrated in the aftermath of the Skopje earthquake transformed the reconstruction effort into a symbol of friendship and brotherhood among peoples.

Prior to 1900, the seismic history of Skopje, as part of the Vardar seismic zone, is practically reduced to a rather brief description of the earthquake catastrophes of Scupi in 518 A.D. and that of Skopje in 1555. The old Scupi was situated about 4-5 km northwest of the center of the present Skopje. As ground fissure extending over 45 km in length and up to 4 meters in width is reported for this earthquake, it seems that it is the strongest shock that has ever occurred in Macedonia. The earthquake of 1555 is said to have demolished a part of Skopje. Both earthquakes are estimated to be of strong intensity. sk/fd/9:00

More Macedonians for Robert D. Kaplan

By David Edenden

Posting to a Greek Message Board, a Macedonian using the pseudonym, Danielmaco, has posted a summary of those Macedonians who landed on Ellis Island between 1900 - 1914 and who declared themselves to be "Macedonian" as a percentage of the overall Macedonian Slav immigration.

He does not post an overall summary, but it ranges from 12% from Ohrid to 42% in Banitsa. People of Banitsa should be proud! It was a great deal of work. Good for Danielmaco.

The important point is that a significant section of the Macedonian people, prior to World War I, saw themselves as Macedonian, even though they did not have a country, an officially recognized language, an Orthodox Church, or a major league soccer team ... to their name. Therefore the Greek slander that Tito invented Macedonianism should be buried, never to be dug up again.

I nominate Robert D. Kaplan and Matthew Nimetz, as co-chairmen, to officiate at the interment ceremony

Macedonia Church In Serbia?

Macedonia, Serbia to consider church trade-off?
B92 - News -NOVI SAD
25 July 2007 | 12:00
--

Macedonia will allow a Serbian church to be built on its territory if a Macedonian church is built in Serbia.

The Macedonian government is prepared to allow the construction of Serbian Orthodox church in Macedonia led by Bishop Jovan Vraniškovski, under the condition that the Macedonian church is given the same opportunity in Serbia, according to President of the Association of Vojvodina Macedonians Dragan Velkovski.

Velkovski told Novi Sad daily Građanski List that this emerged from a meeting within the Macedonian Foreign Affairs Ministry attended by President of the National Council of Macedonians Jovan Radeski and President of the Macedonian Community in Serbia Gojko Ilijevski.

He did not say whether the suggestion has been sent to the Serbian Foreign Ministry.

“I believe that the suggestion is a good one because it creates conditions for reconciliation between the two churches,” Velkovski said."

Greeks Find Macedonians in 1920!

Dear Robert D. Kaplan,
Author, "Balkan Ghosts"

From: David Edenden

Below is an article regarding the results of the 1920 Greek Census in Greek Macedonia, published by The Rainbow Party of ethnic Macedonians in Greece. The Greek government has classified it as top-secret for reasons that are obvious from the article below. Maybe you can write on how the Greek government was the first to recognize Macedonians, as a people, in the census and even commissioned the first Macedonian language school text book!

Robert, I think it is time for a mea culpa ... you know what I mean.

2000 Who Says There Are No Minority Languages in Greece:
October 2000

It is widely known that Greece refuses to acknowledge the existence of national minorities and minority languages. Similarly, in the Greek census of 1961, 1971, 1981 and 1991 any mention of one's mother tongue is absent. This is not by chance but, rather, a deliberate policy of the Greek government. In the earlier census of 1940 and 1951 one can find such declarations as "Slavic" language. Whereas, in the census of 1928 one can find a language declaration of "Slav Macedonian."

However, in the census of 1920, immediately after Greece's acquisition of the "New Territories" the government of the day offers some revealing information. In the census of 19 December, 1920, the official Greek census form had a separate area asking: "what is your mother tongue? What is the language you speak at home? If your mother tongue is not Greek do you understand Greek? This census document can be found in the book by M. Houliarakis (Geografiki, dioikitiki kai plithismiaki ekseliksi tis Ellados tom G' page 363)

The data obtained from the census of 1920 offers great detail about the population to the point of distinguishing between deaf males and deaf females. It also includes the data on language and mother tongue.

Unfortunately, the census information relating to the population of the "New Territories" was never made public. This information preceded the exchanges of Christian and Muslim populations between Turkey and Greece or the so-called "voluntary" population exchanges between Greece and Bulgaria.

At that time Greece only published the results from the geographic area of "old Greece" (Sterea, Evoia, Thessalia, Arta, Ionian Islands, Cyclades, Peloponese...). Five volumes containing census data from the "New Territories," which included information on religion and language, were prohibited from being made public.

In the archives of the Census Council or the General Archives of the Greek state we shall not find census data on the northern territories (the new territories of Macedonia and Western Thrace) for the census period of 1920.

However, page 182 of the volume of census data for 1920 (published in 1929) for the area of Trikala (in Thessaly and Arta just south of the new territories) the following linguistic categories are reported for mother tongue:

Greek, Spanish, Romi, Koutsovlach, Albanian, Bulgarian, Serbian and 37 individuals from Trikala who declared their mother tongue as Macedonian. [page 1] | [page 2]

This is official census data published by the Greek government wherein, not only is the Macedonian language documented by the census authority but it is rightly distinguished from Bulgarian and Serbian.

One can now appreciate why the 1920 census results for the "New Territories" have gone missing.

We would like to thank Mr. Dimitrios Lithoksoou for uncovering this data, which we published in Volume 5 of our magazine, Nova Zora (New Dawn). Mr. Lithoksoou has his own Web site with several pages of interest to the Macedonians of Greece.

Government adopts measures due to high temperatures
Macedonian Information Agency

Skopje, July 19 (MIA) - Upon the recommendation of the Coordination Body and the Crisis Management Center, the Government adopted late Wednesday measures for reduction of harmful effects on citizens' health in the next few days, said Health Minister Imer Selmani at Thursday's press conference.

The measures foresee introduction of shortened working hours, which now stands at six, until the next Government decision, while health institutions that treat individuals of vulnerable groups should keep temperature under 26C in all facilities if possible.

Employees working indoors and not directly exposed to the Sun are to work from 07,00h to 13,00h, while those working outdoors and directly exposed to the Sun should work from 07,00h to 11,00h and 18,00h to 20,00h, while pregnant women should be exempt from work during the high temperatures.

Health Minister Selmani stressed that measures are mandatory for the state and public administration, and act as recommendations for the business and civil sector.

According to information from the Hydro-meteorological Office, temperatures would exceed 41C during the next week.

'This is sufficient for us to undertake measures in order to prevent negative phenomena on citizens' health', underlined Minister Selmani. ik/f"

A Revised Guide to Contributors to "The Macedonian Tendency"

by David Edenden

"The Macedonian Tendency" is a group blog. It has moved here from an old site, http://david-edenden.blogspot.com/ which will continue for the time being, until all the articles have been migrated to this site.

The purpose of this blog is to inform foreign journalists and politicians about "the Macedonian question" today. My main focus is to help in the process of recognition of Macedonia's constitutional name, the fight for the rights of Macedonians in Greece and Bulgaria and to a lesser extent in Albania.

We really need book an movie reviews along with the other arts. Sports reviews are also welcome.

If, like myself, it is necessary for you
to use a pseudonym, please fell free to do so. To contribute send an email to me and I will respond with a link making the process simple and pain free.

Feel free to introduce yourself and write on any topic relating to Macedonia, its history and culture without my prior approval. I do not expect that everyone will agree with my eccentric views, so debate within the blog is not a bad thing.

See my posts for a guide on formatting your articles. I have started posting long articles. With the "Table of Contents" on the side, it mimics a news magazine.

Uses links.
This long post about Robert Kaplan is a good example of the use of links.

I am not interested in using this blog to display the divisions that are reflected in Macedonian politics. I generally support all Macedonian governments, although I disagree with many of their individual positions. Macedonians need a big tent. One of my favorite expressions is "some people look for converts, while others look for heretics." Lets all look for converts and not needlessly look for battles within our community.

Let's use Jews and Israel as a model. Jewish support for Israel is unwavering, however many Jews fell free to offer suggestions for Israeli policy. I have in the past published warnings against Nato membership, the EU and other issues without damning the Macedonian politicians who promote them.

Too Many Macedonian News Groups

By David Edenden

I try to monitor four Yahoo Newsgroups: RMDigest, mkakademija, makheritage, MacedonianMediaMonitor.

There is a great deal of duplication and it would be a great help to me if these groups were merged. My suggestion is that RMDigest be the one that is kept active. The others could be used only for their archives.

For those who are active posters, they should be allowed free access to post to the group, so that people do waste their time posting the same article while waiting for approval. If the article is deemed to be offensive, then it can be removed.

Thank you.

Macedonian Soldiers to Soldier on in Iraq!

DM Elenovski met US Department of State officials
Macedonian Information Agency

DM Elenovski met US Department of State officials

Skopje, July 16 (MIA) - The current situation in Iraq and the achieved progress of the Republic of Macedonia in this period were the topics of discussion between the Macedonian Defence Minister Lazar Elenovski and Lawrence Butler, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs and Debra Cagan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Coalition Affairs.

At the meeting they exchanged views on participation of the Macedonian troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2003 contributing in stabilisation and democratisation of the country.

Minister Elenovski emphasised that the Republic of Macedonia will continue to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom and together with the US will share the values, which are the real path to build and spread them throughout the world.

- The US will continue to support the Republic of Macedonia in integration to NATO. This is the position of the US Government and people which is unchanged and will not be changed additionally because based on mutual democratic values which we share as people and states are directed towards the same goal and at the same time we share the challenges and problems, Macedonian DM Elenovski said after the meeting.

He said that US support is one of the most important which is necessary for us especially prior to the NATO Summit in Bucharest next year. This will probably result in invitation for membership of the Republic of Macedonia to NATO, Elenovski said.

Butler, expressing gratitude for the Macedonian contribution for the peace and stability in Iraq, pointed out that the US will remain in close contacts until the operation in Iraq lasts.

- Macedonian troops in Iraq proved very well and the impression is very positive, Butler said.

Answering the journalist question he informed that he travels with his colleagues from Pentagon in a regular consultation with their partners because they consider that it is very important to inform the countries on latest political moves of their government.

Butler and Cagan will visit Tirana on Tuesday, on Wedensday they will visit Sarajevo, in Sofia are expected to arrive on Friday and on Monday they will be in Mongolia.

The US delegation led by Butler and Cagan will meet with members of the parliament Vladimir Gjorcev and Ruzdi Matoshi. sk/fd/13:20
