Rice: We don't insist on independent Kosovo

Sankt Petersburg /21/05/ 13:59

The United States and Europe do not insist on Kosovo independence in the draft-resolution of the UN Security Council, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Monday.

"The draft-resolution does not insist on independence. It makes it possible for independence to take place. There is no line in the resolution that says Kosovo shall be independent, Rice told Russian television NTV.

She confirmed that one of the main reasons for such draft is the current disunity among the UN Security Council members over the future status of Kosovo.

Rice praised the UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari's plan, as it protects the interests of all communities in the province. She reiterated the US position that Kosovo is a special case to be granted independence under international supervision, and it could not be a precedent for resolution of problems in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. /end/
