Obama Ignores Macedonian Cry, Accepts Greek Gifts

By David Edenden

I had assumed that the Greek lobby would come calling on Senator Barack Obama and I was right. We will see if pandering to the Greek lobby, ignoring human rights violations of ethnic Macedonian in Greece will propel Obama to the Whitehouse or cause his downfall.

MENENDEZ, OBAMA AND SNOWE TAKE TO U.S. SENATE EFFORT TO END FYROM HOSTILE AND IRREDENTIST PROPAGANDA AGAINST GREECE

Legislation to stop state-sponsored propaganda by FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), which is potentially dangerous for Greece, was introduced in the U.S. Senate today by Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), along with Presidential candidate and Chairman of the European Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL).

More than 75 Members of Congress and climbing are sponsoring similar legislation (HR 356) in the House of Representatives.

The Resolution points to a television report showing students in a FYROM state-run school being taught that parts of Greece, including Greek Macedonia, are rightfully parts of FYROM. The legislation also points to various recently-published textbooks which contain maps of ‘Greater Macedonia’ extending many miles into Greece and Bulgaria. The Resolution points out that FYROM propaganda, contrary to the U. N. Interim Accord, instills hostility and a rationale of irredentism in portions of the population of FYROM toward Greece and the history of Greece.

The legislation urges FYROM to adhere to the U.N. brokered Interim Agreement, which directs the parties to “promptly take effective measures to prohibit hostile activities or propaganda by state-controlled agencies and to discourage acts by private entities likely to incite violence, hatred or hostility” and review the content of textbooks, maps, and teaching aids to ensure that such tools are stating accurate information. The bill also urges FYROM to work with Greece within the U.N. framework process to achieve longstanding United States and United Nations policy goals by reaching a mutually acceptable official name for FYROM.

  2. I used to be a huge Obama supporter, but after hearing about this, I was discusted.

That land IS rightfully Macedonia's. What the hell did we EVER DO to anyone? You know, in the past, greek's never wanted to be associated with 'barbarian' Macedonian's, and now they're claiming our history and land for their own.

I can't take it. I feel useless and powerless. When will people understand?

    Republican for President 2008!

  4. A democratic win would indicate a very difficult time ahead for Macedonia on 2 fronts:
    The name issue with Greece
Kosovo and the Albanians in Macedonia.

The Clintons and the democrats have consistently sided with the Greek and Albanian lobbies for years. The situation in the Balkans, and the weakened state of the affairs in the region are directly attributable to the American Democratic leaders (within whose ranks are a great deal of Greeks). No matter what happens, Macedonians the world over must do two things: Adjust their mentalities to view solidarity with one another as a priority, and strive to become the best they can in any field they choose but ideally moving up in the political ranks within the nations they have emigrated to.

  5. First of all I must say I come here with no intention to fight. I understand why you feel like that since if I were you I would perhaps believe the same. But we must all understand the whole Macedonia problem is a USA trick to make Balkans fight over each other instead of unite and become powerful all over the world.

I'm Greek and I believe that all Balkans together can make the change. However as you see USA doesn't want a powerful Balkan area so that they can controls us and do whatever they want. That's why there's using means of propaganda to makes us fight instead of unite.

I believe that there's nothing to separate with our other Balkan brothers and that a name shouldn't make us fight so hard. I consider a good solution to the problem to be the use of the name SlavoMacedonia or something like that which indicates a place where people aren't greek.

You see I live in Macedonia (in greek Macedonia and believe me, it's just a name, it doesn't indicate a different nation or anything) and in Thessaloniki and all people here are greek. There's no Macedonia thing. It's all propaganda just to to makes us fight over each other.

It saddens me to see that situation since our people are so close to each other when it comes to other things.

I hope my message won't be deleted because I believe in the Internet democracy. I'm interested to hear your opinions :)

  7. Angie, it is more than a US/EU plot.

There is a struggle in Greece (and in all countries) between patriots and nationalists. Patriots love their country while nationalists hate their neighbours.

There are people in Greece (nationalists) who believe that fellow citizens "who are not with us are against us". These people want to deny basic human rights to their ethnic Macedonian and Turkish minorities.

Other Greeks (patriots) believe that fellow citizens "who are not against us are with us". These people want to allow basic human rights to their ethnic Macedonian and Turkish minorities.

The US/EU (like many "great powers" in history) exploit the fears of smallers countries to spread hatred and division for their own national interest. It makes it difficult for patriots to reach across the ethnic divide to build solidarity.

Barack Obama is in this tradtion of favouring nationalists rather than encouraging patriots and the US mainstream media is his knowing accomplice.

  8. Angie, I will not be publishing your latest post. I do not have time to educate you on the Macedonian minority in Greece.

Please see "Greece and the Macedonian Question Today" and "Greece and The Macedonian Question Yesterday". Especially read "Noel Malcolm's "THE NEW BULLY OF THE BALKANS " (1992)" It will open your eyes.

Thanks for your comments and good luck.

  10. I have one thing to say to the obviously ignorant presidential candidate (that supposedly will fight against genocide but endorses an obvious cultural genocide against Macedonians all over the world)
and this is my message to him: let me introduce you to Kunta Kinte (or would you rather like Toby?)
    sincerely yours
