Just How Anti-Russian IS Sarkozy?

By David Edenden,

We just have to sit back and pause and mark this occasion to reflect on the degree to which Sarkozy and company are trying to subvert Russia.

It is interesting to me that France and the EU have a plan to cooperate with dictators of the Arab world who will not let their women drive, while at the same time say that increased cooperation with Russia is not in the cards because of Russia' democracy deficit.

I want to see a picture of Sarkozy and Gaddafi walking hand in hand ... spreading democracy no doubt!

Union of Mediterranean, About to Be Inaugurated, May Be Mostly Show

"PARIS — Perhaps the grandest new idea of France’s president, Nicolas Sarkozy, looking to give his presidency of the European Union a lasting stamp, is the Union of the Mediterranean. An effort to bind the 17 nations bordering the Mediterranean Sea with the European Union around regional projects, the new union will be inaugurated next week at a Paris summit meeting."

Hoare on Sarkozy

By David Edenden

In addition to Sarkozy causing problems for all of Europe, we also have to blame his foreign minister Bernard Kouchner, who founded Doctors Without Borders, and as such should be on the road to "canonization" in the struggle for human rights. Instead, he is not only ignoring the plight of ethnic Macedonians in Greece, but is working hand in glove with the Greek government to destroy the ethnic identity of Macedonians all around the world.

The Greek plan is to have Macedonia change its name to "Republic of Skopje" and then afterwords to lobby governments all around the world to change the name of Macedonians, in the their respective census' , to "Skopians". To change the name of their church to the "Skopian Orthodox Church. To change the name of their language to the "Skopian Slavic Language".

Sometime people just live to long. Kouchner has already pissed on his own legacy, not exactly like ... but similar to ... that other Frenchman who lived too long ... that hero of WW1 ... Marshall Petain.

Nicolas Sarkozy - a sorry excuse for a European
Greater Surbiton (also - The Henry Jackson Society)
Marko Attila Hoare

When Nicolas Sarkozy defeated Segolene Royal in last year’s French presidential election, there were some grounds for optimism that French foreign policy might take a turn for the better. Indeed, Sarkozy - no anti-American - has taken the important step of opting to bring France back into NATO’s integrated command, thereby reversing one of Charles de Gaulle’s most symbolic acts of Gallic independence vis-a-vis the US. Yet where South East Europe is concerned, Sarkozy has on at least five counts proven himself to be as obstructive and destructive as French presidents come; an enemy of the region and of the cause of European unity.

1) Sarkozy argued against Turkey’s entry into the EU on the grounds that ‘Turkey is in Asia Minor’ and that ‘I won’t be able to explain to French school kids that Europe’s border neighbors are Iraq and Syria.’ He is, meanwhile, no doubt aware that the state of which he is head includes territories in the Caribbean, South America and the Indian Ocean as its integral parts or ‘overseas departments’. It is difficult to believe that the French president genuinely has difficulty with the concept of an EU including Turkey, which was part of the Ancient Greek world and the Roman Empire and whose largest city was for a time the Roman capital, but has no difficulty with the concept of a France that borders on Brazil. Or that he is unaware that EU member Cyprus is, geographically, more wholly Asian than Turkey. Either Sarkozy really is spectacularly ignorant - which I find difficult to believe - or he is cynically playing up to the popular ignorance and chauvinism of his citizens in the most vulgar manner.

2) At the NATO summit in Bucharest in April, Sarkozy vetoed the granting of a Membership Action Plan to Georgia and Ukraine; for all his denial, he appears to have done so because he did not want to offend Russia. This makes no sense in terms of principles; it is as if Norway should have been denied NATO membership so as not to offend Sweden; or Poland, so as not to offend Belarus. A sovereign state’s right to join a military alliance cannot be the subject of a veto by one of its neighbours; otherwise it ceases to be sovereign. The deference to Russia harks back to an era of imperial spheres of influence. Sarkozy appears less interested in the principle of European unity than in pursuing old-style imperial diplomacy on the European continent.

3) Sarkozy has long supported Greece in its dispute with Macedonia without pretending that this has anything to do with principles: ‘I always stressed that we support the Greek position in the name issue. Greeks are our friends.’ In his most recent statement, however, Sarkozy not only argues that Macedonia should back down because ‘the newcomer is the one that should make efforts’, but reportedly also on the grounds that Macedonia is a ‘non-democratic country’. This marks a new low in French efforts to destabilise a fragile country that was deemed sufficiently democratic by the international community to warrant international recognition back in 1992, and whose provisions for minority rights are incomparably better than that of Greece, which does not even recognise the existence of its Macedonian and Turkish minorities. The consequences of a Macedonian collapse for peace and stability in Europe should not need emphasising; Sarkozy is playing his cynical, Gaullist game in the most irresponsible manner possible.

4) While denying Macedonia’s democratic credentials, France under Sarkozy is reverting to the traditional French policy of supporting Serbia, the country primarily responsible for the catastrophes in the Balkans in the 1990s, and whose attempts to undermine Kosova’s independence are endangering peace and stability in the Balkans more than anything else. France’s ambassador in Belgrade, Jean Francois Terral, is reported to have described Serbia as ‘the country with the greatest possibilities in the Balkans’. He is quoted as saying that ‘as far as France is concerned, Serbia has the priority among Western Balkan states’. After all the efforts in which the West has engaged in this decade, to encourage Serbia to change its ways and behave in a responsible manner, France now appears to be reinforcing the old, destructive belief of Serbia’s - that it is a natural regional hegemon with a right to preeminence over its smaller and weaker neighbours. And this without demanding any commensurate change in Serbian policy toward Kosova.

5) While rewarding the two Balkan states - Greece and Serbia - that are pursuing the most destructive, nationalistic policies at the expense of the wider region, Sarkozy has taken efforts to punish Croatia, a state that has turned its back on extreme nationalism. In contrast to Serbia, Croatia since 2000 has abandoned expansionism vis-a-vis Bosnia, abandoned support for anti-Bosnian separatists and come round to full cooperation with the war-crimes tribunal in the Hague. Yet in response to the Irish rejection of the Lisbon Treaty, Sarkozy has announced that France will veto further EU enlargement until the treaty is ratified - a step that above all punishes Croatia, which is the next state slated for EU membership. Showing scant regard for the democratic will of his fellow Europeans, he appears to be willing to punish Croatia and other EU aspirants for the fact that votes within the EU have not gone his way.

Nicolas Sarkozy is a sorry excuse for a European. His foreign policy makes no pretence at being guided by any principles or consistency, and he appears to revel in its selfish, nationally egotistical character. Nevertheless, at a certain level, one must admire his readiness to behave so unreasonably: the EU is a body that awards the unreasonable and the selfish and that punishes the well behaved. If an EU member - or indeed a non-member - wishes to get its way, it pays for it to be stubborn and obstructive, as then the EU’s spineless, amoral bureaucrats will pander to it with talk about a ‘compromise acceptable to both sides’ or other such cliches designed to conceal appeasement. It is difficult to see that Sarkozy’s policy toward South East Europe is inspired by anything other than short-term, tactical and narrowly national considerations, but he is at least prepared to go about trying to get what he wants.

It would be encouraging if our own British government were to be similarly stubborn and obstructive in pursuit of goals where, justifiably, our policies have diverged from France’s: over EU and NATO expansion; Turkey; Macedonia; etc. Were it to do so, it would achieve more than it does. But I’m not holding my breath.

Greek "No!" to Macedonian Refugees Returning Home

By David Edenden,

Macedonia is finally bringing up the issue of the rights of the Macedonian "Greek Civil War" era refugees for property redress and citizen issues. (See "Begasli"). The Greek government is not amused!

The Macedonian government has its back to the wall after its membership to Nato was vetoed by Greece with the enthusiastic approval by Sarkozy, even though Bush steadfastly supported Macedonia's bid.

Macedonia's (along with Turkey's) EU bid is also slated to be vetoed by Greece. Macedonia is now merely going through the motions of applications with "zero" chance of admission to either Nato or the EU. (Where is Putin when we need him?)

Macedonia has nothing to lose and everything to gain by pushing this issue. It should press Matthew Nimetz to address this issue in public and in print so that the politicians in Washington, who have adopted the Greek position on the Macedonian question, can have their feet put to the fire!

I'm talking to you Barack Obama!

FYROM pushes ‘refugee’ demands
Kathimerini

Thursday July 3, 2008

Athens yesterday rebuffed calls by the foreign minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) for current citizens of FYROM who left Greece during the civil war to be allowed to reclaim lost property and apply for Greek citizenship.

Sources dismissed the comments by Antonio Milososki as a departure from the focus of talks between Greek and FYROM government officials which are aimed at finding a mutually acceptable name for FYROM. But Milososki said Athens was trying to address other issues. “If we follow this logic, then it would be good to close all issues that might cause misunderstandings in the future,” Milososki said. “This applies also to the restitution of properties of the refugees from Greece who are Macedonian citizens, but have grounds for receiving Greek citizenship too,” Milososki said.

Greek diplomatic sources said it was FYROM, not Greece, that has been trying to divert ongoing UN-mediated talks from the name issue. Greece has said solving the name dispute is a priority.

The same point was made in a letter sent by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to his FYROM counterpart Branko Crvenkovski. “Macedonia is fully qualified to join NATO but it should resolve the name dispute with Greece beforehand,” Sarkozy said in the letter, made public yesterday. In a speech before the Greek Parliament last month, Sarkozy had said France would stand firmly by Greece’s side in the name dispute.

In a related development, sources told Kathimerini that groups representing FYROM citizens in Greece are organizing a rally at the Niki border crossing with FYROM in which they have invited “all refugees chased out of Greece” to participate.

June 26th - "Middle East" Beware ... Sarkozy Is Not Trustworthy

By David Edenden

I guess Sarkozy is ignorant of the fact that the people in the "Middle East" can read newspaper accounts of his sniveling performance at the NATO meeting in Bucharest.

What a pathetic tool!

"JERUSALEM (Reuters) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy put himself forward on Monday as a possible Middle East peace broker, offering in a speech to Israel's parliament to help reach agreement and mobilize French troops if necessary.

'I ask you to trust us because we want to help you,' said Sarkozy, the first French president to address the Knesset since Francois Mitterrand in 1982."

Wonder Why Szarkozy Has Adopted The Greek Position?

Turkish Intelligence Activities under Increased Public Scrutiny in Turkey and Greece:
Balkanalysis.com
By Ioannis Michaletos and Christopher Deliso

"There are clear interrelations with other regional issues as well. France, notably, has supported Greece on the Macedonia name issue, with President Sarkozy’s avowed Hellenism perhaps bolstered by his country’s sale of billions in arms to Greece.

The two countries held a joint military exercise in May. As Balkanalysis.com reported last year, France has also been keenly interested in reported oil deposits off the coast of Cyprus, which the country opened to foreign exploration last year- despite vociferous Turkish protests."

June 8th - Sarkozy, Bouchie ( Your Fellow Countryman), On Macedonians 1918!

By David Edenden,

Sarkozy should hang his head in shame.

Robert Badinter ... are you awake?

Edmond Bouchie de Belle on the Macedonians, 1918!
Makedonika: The Macedonian Blog: "

(Edmond Bouchie de Belle, born August 23, 1878, Doctor of Law, was a high financial official in Paris, advisor at the Ministry of Finances, and during W.W.I occupied a prominent position in the Headquarters of the French East Army in the Balkans. In its way, de Belle had the opportunity of spending a substantial period of time near the great bend in the River Crna, following the movement of the Army in the vicinity of lake Ostrovo, Lerin, Bitola, Prilip and finally Skopje, where he died on October 20, 1918. During his stay, de Belle wrote a book about Macedonia, which was printed posthumously in Paris under the title Le Macedoine et les Macedoniens in 1922. The book was awarded by the French Academy of Sciences.)
The Macedonian question is not a question of yesterday or today. Macedonia has had a long past behind it, and it will not cease to interest Europe in the future. Europe has come to know Macedonia mainly owing to two facts: one, its geographical position as a crossroads of world routes -the first, from Belgrade and Novi Pazar through the Vardar valley to Salonika, and the second, the ancient Via Egnatia from Durazzo to Salonika again, while Salonika as Macedonia’s port and according to its importance does not lag behind Constantinople or Suez. Salonika has a dominant position over the East
Mediterranean and the routes to Asia.

The second reason is: the population is different in nationality according to its origin and has long since been an object of the tactics of influence by the neighbouring Balkans states, with the support of the Great Powers, the interests of which have been linked with the situation in the Balkan countries. ..

Macedonia is populated by three groups of nationalities. One of them is the disputed nationality of the Macedonian Slavs, or briefly, Macedonians, which comprise the core of the rural population. Then follow three other nationalities which aim to dominate the Macedonians -the Bulgarians, Serbs and Greeks -and still another three nationalities detached from the dispute -the Wallachians, Turks and Jews. But none of these nationalities populates a defined territory, but appears here and there throughout the country .

In all the fields of Macedonia there is a nationality of peasants with a Slav language and of the Orthodox religion. The Bulgarians consider them as being their own “in language and heart,” even citing the Greater Bulgaria, created by the Treaty of San Stefano and the name “Bulgarians” under which the victims of the Treaty of Berlin fought against Turkish oppression. The Serbs consider them as “Serbs” .-since Dusan’s state formerly included “the whole of Macedonia,” according to the manuscripts surviving Turkish subjugation, and since the language was allegedly “Old Serbian” and since the Macedonians celebrated the family “slava” or Saint’s day.

Finally come the Greeks, according to whom neither the origin nor the language are of decisive significance, but only the “spirit” and culture, which are allegedly Greek; just as no one can say, for instance, that the French are not Latins, so, too, no one can say that the Macedonians are not “Greeks.” It is obvious that the Macedonian Slavs are not Greeks. And in spite of the fact that they bear some similarities in their character, faith and language with the Bulgarians and the Serbs, they differ from both.

You may ask a peasant from the district of Ostrovo, or Bitola, what he feels himself to be, and in nine instances out of ten, he will answer you -Macedonian! Accordingly, the Slav population of Macedonia should be considered as a separate nationality, the name of which would be Macedonian Slavs, or briefly, Macedonians …

June 7th - Sarkozy to Macedonian Minority in Greece: Drop Dead!

By David Edenden,

Well ... what more is there left to say.

Maybe if we turn all Macedonian teenage males to be anal whores for Greek sodomites ... maybe that will make Greece and Sarkozy happy... maybe!

Maybe Sarkozy will approve EU funding for lobotomies for all ethnic Macedonians in Greece so they will forever forget their language, history, culture and ethnic identity ... maybe!

Maybe Sarkozy, who is so full of himself, that he contemplates jumping up his own ass, will institute a program for primary school children in France so they will carry a picture of one of the Macedonian Child Refugees from Greece, forbidden to return to their home villages ... unless the renounce their Macedonian ethnicity ... maybe!

Maybe Sarkozy should just FUCK OFF and die! ... maybe!

Maybe Robert Badinter and Elizabeth Badinter could actually say something for fuck's sake ... maybe!

Does anyone in the Republic of Macedonia still see Nato and the EU membership within grasp?

Nato, the EU and Sarkozy are not friends of Macedonians ... anywhere!

Sarkozy pledges that Greece can count on support from France:
ekathimerini.com |

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis:

Thank you for adopting the Greek position on the "Macedonian Question"

French President Sarkozy:

Merci ... thanks for using Vaseline!

Ahead of an official visit to Athens on Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has pledged that he will always stand by Greece’s side in its dispute with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

In an exclusive interview that will be published in full in tomorrow’s Kathimerini English Edition, Sarkozy praised the understanding that he has developed with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. The French president said the Greek premier is not just a partner but “a friend.”

He said that the two have formed an understanding based on a shared view of the structural reforms that their countries have to undergo. Sarkozy believes that the two leaders have a common will to “change and modernize our countries.”

But it is the French president’s comments about the Macedonia dispute that will probably be most welcome in Athens. Sarkozy backed Greece’s position at the NATO summit in Bucharest, which saw FYROM’s bid to join blocked.

Sarkozy told Kathimerini that Greece could always expect to have France’s sympathy and support on the issue.

He also wants Greece to play a significant role in the setting up of a Mediterranean Union to deal with issues that particularly affect the area.

Sarkozy, whose maternal grandfather was a Jew from Thessaloniki, will become the first foreign leader to address Parliament this century. The last foreigner to be given this honor was the senior George Bush in 1991.

Hoare on Nato and Macedonia

By David Edenden

Obviously I agree with Hoare on the Macedonian issue but also on the Bush issue. I am not a Bush supporter, on most issues, but neither an I a Bush hater. I like Bush! Bush has had the political courage to stand up to the powerful Greek lobby and support Macedonia, whereas the Bush haters are AWOL on the Macedonian issue!

I'm talking to you Eric Alterman!
NATO’s double disgrace
... Nor has the Bucharest summit upheld the noble principle that NATO should serve as a framework within which the states of ‘new Europe’, along with ‘old Europe’, can coexist and cooperate. Not only did the NATO states let down Ukraine and Georgia, but they could not even muster the will to pressurise Greece into allowing Macedonia to join the alliance without first having to change its name. Macedonia’s membership in NATO is crucial for the stability of South East Europe, and Greece’s policy of trying to crush the sovereignty and national identity of a European country has nothing to do with democratic values, and much more in common with fascist traditions - it was Greece’s 1930s fascist dictator Ioannis Metaxas who pioneered the most extreme measures to forcibly Hellenise the Macedonian national minority in Greek Macedonia. (my emphasis - David Edenden)
This point was amply reaffirmed by recent Greek attempt to interfere with freedom of expression in Macedonia, by pressurising the latter over the appearance of billboards in the Macedonian capital of Skopje, showing a swastika superimposed on a Greek flag. The billboards were private advertisements for which the Macedonian government was not responsible; the Greek regime’s attempt to link Macedonia’s NATO bid to its removal of these billboards puts it on a par with the Muslim fundamentalists who rioted over the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed. (my emphasis - David Edenden)

Greece has been a very poor member of NATO; it has only about 130 troops in Afghanistan - the same number as Macedonia, a non-member with one-fifth its population. Nevertheless, a senior NATO source apparently blamed Macedonia for Greece’s veto of its NATO bid.

The sad truth is that the widely reviled Bush has shown himself to be a much better European than France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy. Although Sarkozy is an improvement on the last two French presidents, is at least relatively pro-American, and has agreed to bring France back into the NATO integrated command structure, yet he has persistently shown himself ready to put considerations of narrow national interest above higher principles - and to justify it in the crudest terms. He argued against Turkey’s entry into the EU on the grounds that ‘Turkey is in Asia Minor’ and that ‘I won’t be able to explain to French school kids that Europe’s border neighbors are Iraq and Syria.’ (This from the president of a republic that includes territories in the Caribbean, South America and the Indian Ocean as its integral parts or ‘overseas departments’). He supports Greece against Macedonia in the ‘name dispute’ on similarly principled grounds: ‘I always stressed that we support the Greek position in the name issue. Greeks are our friends.’
The US has shown itself to be more principled and more pro-European than France. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has contradicted NATO’s source, and stated unambiguously that Macedonia was not to blame for the failure of its NATO bid. The US has now promised to boost assistance to, and bilateral relations with Macedonia. It is a sad day for NATO when the US must bypass it to support the more youthful and vulnerable members of the European family.
One of the sorriest aspects of this dismal NATO summit was the failure of our own Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support the US, either over Ukraine and Georgia or over Macedonia. The charitable explanation is that this was the inaction of a PM inexperienced in foreign affairs who still has not found his feet. The more worrying possibility is that Brown is reacting to Tony Blair’s controversial experience by attempting to be less pro-American and more ‘pro-European’ (i.e. anti-European but pro-Franco-German). This would be a mistake. If it is left to the US, alone of all the major NATO countries, to stand up for the East Europeans, this will not be good for European unity.

In the Same Way That The Germans Will Never Forgive The Jews For The Holocaust ...

By David Edenden

In the same way that the Germans will never forgive the Jews for the holocaust, France and other NATO members, who opposed Macedonia's NATO membership bid, will never forgive Macedonians for not voluntarily wiping themselves off the face of the map.

France and other NATO members do not want to face the facts that they admitted Greece as a full member, notwithstanding the policy of "denying the very ethnicity" of the ethnic Macedonian minority living in Greece. Greece's policy towards their ethnic Macedonian minority is cultural genocide ... plain and simple.

Sarkozy and and that "human rights" faker, Bernard Kouchner, have a lot to be ashamed of.

Read the article below and weep.

THE NEW BULLY OF THE BALKANS, Noel Malcolm,
The Spectator" of 15th of August, 1992
MAK-NEWS #084.3

(Pictured Parthenon in barbed wires)

You begin to notice it in the moment you arrive on Greek soil. If you land at Athens airport, you can find crude posters declaring "Macedonia is Greek" in the customs hall. If you are crossing by land from the former Yugoslavia, you will find the passport control booth covered with stickers making the same point, some of them in English more hysterical than ammatical: "Macedonia is Greece Since Ever".

......Glancing at the print-out on a computerised bus-ticket, I found, in the space where you might expect "Have a nice trip", the statement, "Macedonia was and shall be Greek". Never outside the communist block have I had such a sense of an all-pervading and unanimous campaign, in which all levels of public life are mobilised to whip up popular feeling. If one adds the world-wide campaign run under the cover of the Greek Tourist Board, it must be the most expensive publicity campaign in Greek history.

It is also the silliest......

Throughout the last two centuries, "Macedonia" has been a geographical expression; it refers to a whole region, which in 1913 was divided between Greece, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia... The part which Yugoslavia obtained was named "the Republic of Macedonia" in 1946; the people who lived there had already been widely referred to as "Macedo-Slavs", and their language as "Macedonian" for decades. When the people of that Yugoslav republic voted for independence last year, it was not surprising that they wanted their new state to be called "Macedonia"-they had no other name. But at this point the Greek government claimed a kind of copyright on the word........

A high-level commission of jurists from the EEC .... recommended immediate recognition [of Macedonia]. But the Greece still block it; and ...... It would take the pen of a Swift or an Orwell to explore all the ramifications of this. More than [two] million people who have spent their lives thinking that they spoke Macedonian, that they read Macedonian literature and watched Macedonian television, are now to be told, at the whim of 12 people lunching in Lisbon, that they speak some nameless thing.....

II

(Pictured A statue of Goddess with a machine-gun)

We are dealing here with the strangest and yet in some ways most typical of all Balkan states - a state with a profound neurosis about its own sense of identity. I refer, of course, to Greece. Much has been written about the problems of ex-Yugoslav Macedonia, and the potentially catastrophic consequences of the EEC's destabilising policy towards it. But little is ever written about the root cause of the problem:the neurotic nature of Greek nationalism....

Their unbroken descent from Plato, Aristotle and Demosthenes sets them apart; theirs is a higher civilisation, a higher destiny. They have nothing to do with the messy history of the Balkans north of their ancient and immemorial border established in 1913 and 1919. This approach to history requires skimming rather selectively over the thousands of years when there was no such thing as a national Greek state. The early Slav invasions, which reached far into Peloponnese and left settlements which spoke Slav well into the 15th century, are preferably ignored. So, too, are the influxes of Albanians which settled many parts of eastern and central Greece ....

In the early 19th century, the population of Athens was24% Albanian, 32% Turkish and only 44% Greek. In the early20th century, Salonica was 60% Spanish-Jewish, 18% Turkish and18% Greek. Things have changed since then.... But just changing the people was not enough. In the mid-1920s, nearly all the Slav, Vlach or other non-Greek place-names were suppressed. Even personal names were not exempt...Boris had they offered him was between "Pericles" and "Byron".been instructed by the local officials that he must change it to a proper Greek name; the choice

The consequence (or rather, the basis) of this policies is that Greece is that rare thing, almost unknown in Europe, a country with no national minorities. They do not exist; the Greek government says so. For such a phenomenon to be found in the Balkans of all places is indeed a miracle- a sign that Greece is certainly not like other countries. Sitting at a cafe in a Slav village near Florina, in northern Greece, surrounded by people talking in the Slav Macedonian language, I pondered this minor miracle. "They say we don't exist," said one of them; "but tell me, do I look like a ghost?"

III

...Within Greece, there are no newspapers or radio broadcasts in their [Slavo-macedonian] language. One group of these Slavs has started a small monthly newsletter, with an estimated readership of 10,000. But they have great difficulty finding a printer, and they say that if copies are sent through the post they tend to "disappear". "Even if we find a sympathetic printer", one told me, "he's usually too scared to take the work; he's afraid of losing all his other contracts,or perhaps of getting bricks through his window."

Another group, has applied for permission to start a cultural society; the application has been turned down, on the grounds that it is "anti-Greek". They are not even allowed to sing songs in their language; the last time this happened, at the village festival of Malitis two years ago, proceedings were broken up by the police.

A few bold individuals have taken their case to human rights conferences at Helsinki, Copenhagen and Moscow. I talked to three of these people, each of whom had encountered certain career problems on his return to Greece. Hristos Sideropoulos, a forestry worker - sacked ... His friend Stavros Anastasiadis owns a small trucking company - now stands idle... Archimandrit Nikodemos Tsarkinias, showed me a peremptory letter from his bishop telling him that he must leave his parish work....

The public hysteria over the "Skopje Republic"[Macedonia] certainly does not help. The weekly nationalist-extremist newspaper Stohos ("Aim") now issues regular personal threats against these individuals or their friends, listing names and addresses; its more general articles on this subject carry titles such as "Cut off Their Heads".

...When I attempt to discuss these issues with Prof. Konstantopoulos, director of the Institute of International Public Law in Salonica, I was assured that the so-called Slavs were just bilingual Greeks...."Why cannot they have a newspaper in their own language?" I asked. "They don't want one!" shouted the professor.....His anger was cataclysmic....A few minutes later, he assured me that "secret figures" revealed that 18% of the population of Yugoslav Macedonia are Greek- a piece of ethnographic nonsense so gross that even Stohos ("Aim") might blush to print it.

IV

The Greek Slav Macedonians are caught between the hammer and the anvil of Greek policy on minorities: assimilation or expulsion. To see successful assimilation in action, one has only to visit the Vlach region in the Pindus mountains of northern Greece. The Vlachs who speak a language closely related to Rumanian, have a population of perhaps no more than50,000 in Greece.... Most modern Greek writings about the Vlachs claim that they are "pure Greeks", descended from ancient Greeks who just happened to acquire a Latin language when they did military service for the Romans... and one recently published Greek book about the Vlachs gives a list of words in the Vlach language borrowed from Greek, and concludes in all seriousness that Vlach is "a Greek dialect".....

The 100,000 Turks of western Thrace, on the other hand, have a much stronger sense of ethnic identity. Yet in the eyes of the Greek state they are not Turks at all; they are "Greek Muslims", a religious minority, not an ethnic one. When DrSadik Ahmet, a surgeon who stood for parliament in 1989, referred in a campaign leaflet to "the Turkish minority", he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for using the word"Turkish"...... (The Turkish population is mainly agricultural;though they have tractors, they have not been granted licences
in the past.

...this summer's Amnesty report on torture and ill-treatment in Greeks prisons and police stations happen to concern Turks, Albanians and other non-Greek victims.... The new Greek electoral law will prevent Dr Ahmet from being re-elected next time, and when he loses parliamentary immunity he may face another deferred prosecution. And the long-standing policy of driving these Turks out of Greece continues....More than 3,000 acres have been confiscated for various public projects in the last ten years, and there is now a plan to seize 15,000 acres of farm-land which at present support20,000 Turks ......

Fear of Turkey is, in the long run, a greater stimulus to neurotic Greek nationalism than the Macedonian issue. The fall of the communist bloc has badly damaged Greek self-esteem; ...today it is Turkey that is emerging as the strategic power-base of the whole region... Hence, .. a Greek government television advertisement every night, "means equal status for Greece in Europe!" - is a statement either meaningless or mendacious......

Personally, I have found that whenever I have long conversation with EEC politicians or officials, there always comes a point when they say, "Between you and me, I can't understand how we ever let Greece in." With its peculiar brand of paranoid nationalism, Greece's foreign policy is now the biggest single impediment to any sensible EEC policy in the Balkans; and if the Greek public mood intensifies any further, it may threaten not only the future of the ex-Yugoslav Macedonia but the territorial integrity of Albania as well. Amid all the discussions about the procedure for new members to join the EEC, has anyone thought of a polite way of inviting one member to leave?

Greek PM Costas Karamanlis sent a message to the Macedonian authorities that Athens is waiting for an adequate response on 'the concession it made' in efforts to solve the issue on name differences. (We can't concede on human rights for Macedonians living in Greece)

'We have taken the necessary steps, now we are waiting for the other side to respond adequately', the Greek PM said yesterday. (No you did not take any steps. Greek policy regarding minority rights is cultural genocide for Macedonians in Greece. Greece is the envy of every fascist, every rascist, every ethnic cleanser in the Balkans.)

Karamanlis spelled out this statement during his official visit to Paris, where he met with the French President Nicholas Sarkozy and PM François Fillon. (Sarkozy and Fillon lagughed in his face)

Karamanlis addressed the issue of differences over the name of Macedonia during talks with French top officials, focusing on the European perspective of the Western Balkan's countries. (The only European perspective is that Greece is an embarrassment.)

Some of the Greek media paid special attention to the cancellation of the scheduled joint press conference. President Sarkozy called off the press meeting. (Sarkozy did not want to be seen with Karamanlis ... too embarrassed)

According to the opposition-oriented daily Ta Nea, by this move, the French President sent a clear message he won't allow to be embroiled into the Greek pre-election campaign. (Sarkosy also sent a message that he thought Karamanlis was a complete a#%hole.)

Macedonian Link to Nicolas Sarkozy

Telegraph newspaper online: "Nicolas Sarkozy was born in 1955, the second of three sons born to a Hungarian immigrant, Pal Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa, and his French wife, Andrée Mallah.

The couple met in 1949 but separated 10 years later, with Pal eventually marrying several more times. Nicolas's maternal family also originates outside France. Andrée Mallah was the daughter of Benedict Mallah, a doctor who at the time of his daughter's wedding had gained a formidable reputation as a urologist and lived in the affluent 17th arrondissement of Paris.

A Sephardic Jew, he was born in Thessalonica, Greece, in 1890. However, the Mallah family can trace their roots back to Provence in Southern France, having originally been forced to leave during the persecution of Jews in the Middle Ages.

At the age of 14, Benedict left Greece to further his education, taking up a place at the Lycée Lakanal boarding school in the southern suburbs of Paris, where he studied medicine. He stayed in France and became a citizen, repaying his debt to his new home by acting as a doctor in the French army during the First World War."
